It is amazing how much difference one place in the batting order makes, isn't it? Jansen would be an excellent number eight but undoubtedly looks too high at number seven...!
It is all very well talking about keeping the tail-enders calm, etc, but it should not have come to that. The disappointment lay in the decision by Stubbs to go for an outrageous shot when he was doing perfectly well with conventional application (De Kock's expression told the story); in Klaasen, having produced one of the greatest innings, to go for a wide delivery (having previously left similar balls), and then in Millar allowing Maharaj to take the single which kept him on strike. Note how India were content to take singles, waiting for one bad delivery, putting pressure on the bowlers to keep bowling perfectly. Knowing they had a weak tail, Klaasen and Miller, with their vast experience, simply had to manage the game.
I completely agree with you, mate, and I think we're largely on the same page. I'm largely saying the India should be given credit for inducing those fateful errors. Pant bringing play to a halt for three minutes snapped Klaasen's momentum, Bumrah's hard-earned reputation meant the equation never really 'felt' like 30 runs off 30 balls and, in general, India made things happen. They didn't just sit back and wait for SA to blow up...
Very enjoyable tournament. Not as long as IPL & more in it for the bowlers. Miller out to a 'brilliant' catch. Very unlucky. Exciting final. The Proteas just conceded too many runs- the highest in a T20WC final.
I agree, it was a good tournament. Perhaps over-ambitious with its logistics, the Super Eights were extremely rushed, but it just about worked. Again, when you say the Proteas 'conceded' too many runs, India 'scored' them!
Yes, they did! Was an excellent final. Neither team 'froze'. It's just that India was a bit better. I enjoyed all the newsletters thanks. Trust you on way home. (My brother camped outside Wimbledon tennis courts on Sunday night & got to see Lloyd Harris's epic win! So maybe 'maak 'n draai' daar). Cheers.
Marvelous match, marvelously written up. SA were a couple of hits away from closing this down in the 17th but truly extraordinary death bowling from Boom and Arshdeep suffocated the chase. A shaky tournament was topped off with a superb game of cricket and red ball fanatics will have missed out.
Thank you, Iain. It was a brilliant final and, although a couple of teams were badly out of their depth, I fully agree with the concept of regional qualifiers and having a genuine 'world' cup. The problem with the way things are set up currently is that a single upset victory meant Uganda qualifying ahead of Zimbabwe - which is great for Uganda but I suspect Zimbabwe might have acquitted themselves with more purpose had they been there...
Spot-on analysis. When batting ability drops below a certain level, then the supposedly easy business of knocking it somewhere for a single is not actually so easy. I know this from personal experience - and I wasn't facing Jasprit Bumrah! Those who have commented that South Africa was set up to fail by its selection of so many non-batters have it right. Either that, or these highly specialised bowlers needed to deliver on their one and only job by restricting India to a dozen runs fewer.
Jansen is always a moment away from brilliance with the ball, but has too many bad days in all formats. What coach holds the key to him finding consistency?
I did make the point several times that, while Afghanistan may have lost the semi-final, they gave SA a considerable 'leg up' into the final simply by being there...
Thank you Manners, point well made. Jansen will hopefully come good but for now& even in test matches at no 7 is a spot too high.

Had it not been at the expense of Afghanistan in the semi-final, South Africa would have struggled to win against Australia to reach the final
